Migrant applications for tiers 2 and 5 of the points based system will open on 27 November 2008

28 October 2008

Today Phil Woolas, Minister of State for borders and immigration, announced the go-live date for tiers 2 and 5 of the points-based system.

Tier 2, relating to skilled workers, replaces the current work permit scheme. Tier 5 covers temporary workers entering the United Kingdom for a short period. We have already implemented tier 1 of points-based system which covers the highly skilled.

When tiers 2 and 5 open to applications, many existing work-based schemes will close. If you are currently in the United Kingdom under one of these categories, you should read the page on transitional arrangements for tiers 2 and 5.

If you are unsure how the introduction of the points-based system will affect you, you should read the page on how changes to our immigration system affect your application to work here.
